CareerFab: Philanthropist and Educator Leah “Lady Like” Pump

  • Posted By : admin/

  • Under : CAREER

What do you get when you put a mentor, socialite and educator together? You get the beautiful and delightful Leah Pump.

Leah is a former teacher and principal and her non profit “The Lady Like Foundation” has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships as well as runs a year round mentorship program for adolescent girls including resource programs, workshops, and events that challenge the ladies to reach their highest potential and become the successful, well-rounded “Lady” they were created to be.  Do you have a life goal in becoming a philanthropist and starting your own 501c3? Well we have the scoop on everything you need to know, read on!

1. Why did you choose your profession?

The creation of my organization came out a lot of bad personal decisions on my part. I was raised in a very conservative and religious family where everything had structure. So when I went to college I let go of all of that and fell love in love with a guy that I ended actually marrying that treated me terribly. I had to humble myself and go back home, get a job and that is when I also returned to my church. This is where I started a ministry for adolescent girls called the “Ladylike” ministry that cautioned them on everything from good hygiene to drugs to bad relationships . From there on out I became there counselor, their mentor, I couldn’t get rid of them (lol!). I would have them meet in my small little apartment each week. We did everything from leadership classes to makeup classes to college application workshops. Then one day a girlfriend of mine told me I should package it into a 501c3. And at first I was reluctant. But eventually I did it and filed the paperwork and so it became the official “Lady Like Foundation” in 2007. I knew that one of things I wanted to do with the Foundation was to give out scholarships like my grandparents.

2. What is the favorite part of your job?

I am determined to make sure the girls I mentor don’t end up making the same mistakes I did. I love to see them grow and flourish into well rounded ladies!

3. What is the most difficult part of your job?

Fundraising. I didn’t become good at fundraising until I met my husband (Dana Pump) who has a foundation that has given away over $10M dollars for cancer research. He showed me how to tell my story, and through networking how to get in front of the right people and what to do after you have met those people. He also showed me how to do grant writing.

Some don’t know this but I struggled even selling one ticket to my very first event. I asked God if you let someone buy one ticket than that would be my sign that this was something he really wanted me to do and I went to the mailbox and there was one envelope for one ticket.

4.  Who is your mentor (if any)?

So many, but definitely my grandmother and my husband. My grandmother who financed my entire operation when I first started. My parents and even my pastor who has been my life coach.

5. Best piece of advice for someone pursuing your field?

You have to be all in. It is so hard to do this. You have to really have a passion and calling for what you do. You also have to be willing to believe in your cause will no one else does and even when no one is helping you. Can you still in a pandemic, bless people and help people when you don’t know where the resources are going to come from? This takes me back to when sometimes you even have to be willing to take it out of your own pocket. I remember feeding my first group of girls with just cereal, cookie and punch or spaghetti and sometimes even just the pizza hut deal specials. Philanthropy really isn’t a money maker. So many people think I get rich and live off my foundation. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

6. If you have not chosen this profession what would have you chosen instead?

I definitely would have stayed in education as a teacher or a principal. I adore teaching. My students to this day still reach out to me. Now once a week, I volunteer and go into local schools in the inner cities teaching a course I developed called the “LadyLike Class” curriculum for Middle and High School girls.

7. Favorite designer?

I love designer fashion but I also am known to wear some of my own pieces from own boutique that I can dress up with a nice Hermès bag and some Louboutins. For high end fashion, I would say my favorite Italian designer is Dolce Gabana. I love their patterns and how it fits curves and its a staple that you can keep it forever. I am also a shoe freak and have thousands of shoes. I have everything from Manolos to Christian Louboutins to Amina Muaddi. I wear dresses every single day, I dress them up and dress them down with sneakers and even slides.

8. Favorite makeup brand?

I mix and match. I go from Laura Mercier to Mac to NYX. NYX has really good concealer. I also love Nars tinted moisturizer and bronzer. Fenty Beauty is also good for highlighters.

9. Favorite skin brand?

I believe you have to have a great canvas before putting makeup on. I currently use BeautyBio products and I have my dermatologist that mixes my own moisturizer for me. I also like Neutrogena SPF products.

10. If you could only choose 5 items to put in your purse everyday, what would they be?

Makeup bag, baby wipes, hand sanitizer/lotion, mask (especially these days) and cell phone!

11. Anything you would like our readers to know that you are supporting, selling or creating?

Please stay tuned for my memoir book “Seven” being released on Amazon and on all platforms this Holiday season! You can donate to my charity year long by visiting TheLadyLike.com.

CareerFab: Attorney and Music Artist Rexy Rolle

  • Posted By : admin/

  • Under : CAREER

What do you get when you put a super talented and legal mind together? You get the one and only Rexy Rolle. Rexy is a licensed attorney but her recent venture into the music industry as a recording artist has everyone talking and her new journey has even been recognized by Forbes. Do you have a career goal in becoming a lawyer or music artist? Well we have the scoop on everything you need to know, read on!

1. Why did you choose your profession?

I knew I wanted to practice law when I was younger, but I wasn’t sure which type of law I’d focus on. When my parents ventured to start an airline in 2000 I witnessed both the triumphs and the trials. As time progressed, and certainly by the time I started law school it was clear to me that I needed to bring value and help where it was needed at Western Air, so that steered my career. My focus on aviation and business law became an operational asset almost immediately.

2. What is the favorite part of your job?

I love a good flow and I truly enjoy working collectively with my team to provide one thing: quality, consistent service to our customers.

3. What is the most difficult part of your job?

Sometimes tough decisions are required on the spot where not everyone wins in that moment. Being responsible for how those choices unfold is difficult but it’s a part of the territory.

4.  Who is your mentor (if any)? We read that you were recently inspired by businesswoman and artist Rihanna regarding your music career.

Cheesy to say, but my parents. I learn a lot of practical tips from them, sprinkled in with life lessons.

5. Best piece of advice for someone pursuing your field?

The aviation industry is large in scope, with many professions tucked away in each sector. Some of those professions are not as known or popular to the general public. I would say, get well versed on the various paths within the field. This field (like most) is also recommendation heavy, we trust the people we have proven business with, so get involved in some capacity early on to connect, whether that’s through clubs, internship, mentoring opportunities, etc.

6. If you have not chosen this profession would have you chosen instead? We see that you recently have ventured into music and you have recorded three singles as a new recording artist and that making music and being a lawyer seem different but are actually alike in the sense you have to know how to finesse words to get your point across.

I would’ve probably done something in Communications/ Entertainment, perhaps a television anchor/ host. Growing up I never wanted to be just one thing. The music journey is fairly new for me, and it requires me building and being consistent with putting out music and really building a base.

7. Favorite designer?

Too many to name. But for work I tend to like quite a bit of Ted Baker. Generally it’s all about the fit and whether I do a double take. I usually shop very fast and only stop if it catches my eye.

8. Favorite makeup brand?

Fenty Beauty! My makeup bag is pretty diverse, with numerous brands. But it’s a plus to support talented black business women (like Rihanna) and that’s easy to do when the products are great.

9. Favorite hair care?

My hair is natural and I wear a lot of protective styles, so keeping my hair moisturized is very important. Argan oil, coconut oils, Shea Moisture shampoo and conditioners are also go-yo hair care products for me.

10. Favorite skin brand?

Recently I’ve been using a few Elta products, mainly tinted facial sunscreen.

11. If you could only choose 5 items to put in your purse everyday, what would they be?

Passport, credit card, press powder for touch ups, phone and lip gloss!

12. Anything you would like our readers to know that you are supporting, selling or creating?

To stay connected, join me on Instagram @rexyrolle and I recently started a new vlog on Youtube @Rexy* (My music is also there!) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsR1uCWYBVarBuNnu_slseQ

Samantha’s
LISTINGS

Are you looking to invest in real estate? Do you have a career goal in become a licensed real estate agent?  Well we have the scoop on everything you need to know with VH1’s “Love and Listings” Samantha Barretto!

  • Why did you choose your profession?

Every wealthy person I encountered shared with me that they invested in real estate so I knew I wanted to learn and understand how the industry worked. I started my career flipping houses with a group of investors in Las Vegas, and when I moved to Los Angeles 2 years later, I fell in love with high end luxury market. So, I got my real estate license and became a full time luxury realtor.

  • What is the favorite part of your job?

The relationships I make. Some clients have turned into life-long friends.

  • What is the most difficult part of your job?

Balance. There are so many moving parts to a real estate transaction and when you have multiple deals going on at once there are a handful of clients, vendors, team members, etc needing your attention and calling you at all hours of the day, so at times it can be hard to have a work life balance.

  • Who is your mentor (if any)?

I worked with a top producing agent for 3 years. When I first got started, she was the only agent in my office who was closing over $10 million deals consistently so I kept reaching out to her to ask if she needed any help. She liked my persistence and took me under as a mentee. I closed over $100 million with her.

  • Best piece of advice for someone pursuing your field?

Patience and Consistency. Your first deal is not going to happen over night. Focus on lead generating and prospecting – host open houses, attend networking events, post on social media anything that has to do with real estate – build a database of future clients and stay connected with them.

  • If you have not chosen this profession would have you chosen instead?

A teacher. I love teaching.

  • Favorite designer?

I shop at Marciano a lot! I feel professional and sexy wearing their clothes. And it is good quality material.

  • Favorite makeup brand?

Bare Minerals – I was blessed with good skin so the lighter the make-up the better for me.

  • Favorite hair care?

I am still trying out different products. I haven’t found one that I absolutely love.

  • Favorite skin brand?

All natural coconut oil! I put coconut oil on my face and body every night when I get out the shower and it leaves my skin glowing and soft.

  • If you could only choose 5 items to put in your purse everyday, what would they be?

Cell phone, chapstick, wallet, notebook, pen

  • Free plug:)– Anything you would like our readers to know that you are supporting, selling or creating?

I support several non-profits for education including The Leela Project, The Mona Foundation, and Hope 4 Kids. Please google all 3 organizations and learn how to support. It is important for us as a community to help one another.

Education (Schools Attended)

Bachelor Degree in Mass Communications at Arizona State University

Have you ever considered straightening your teeth to improve your smile?  Are you thinking about applying to dental school?  Well we have Dr. A to the rescue!  Dr.  Amira Ogunleye is the co-owner of Beautiful Smiles in Florida.  Read on to read her philosophy behind a beautiful smile and how to be successful in the dentistry field!

www.beautifulsmilesfl.com

Instagram:  @beautifulsmilesfl

1) Why did you choose your profession?

I grew up in a very strict household when it came to my studies. My father was all about education so my options were Medical School, Law School, or Dental School.  I had a horrible smile when I was young, I mean very crooked teeth.  I was very insecure about my smile.  I begged my dad for braces and when I got them finally I felt comfortable smiling. That’s when I knew I wanted to be a dentist. The difference it had on my self-confidence was HUGE.  I knew I wanted to do that for people.

2) What is the favorite part of your job?

Definitely the difference I can make in one’s life. It’s amazing how much a new smile can influence a person’s self-esteem and confidence. That feeling at the end of a case when a patient is overwhelmed with emotional joy.  That’s the BEST.

3) What is the most difficult part of your job?

The importance of details in dentistry is the most difficult part. Something as small as 1mm off is SO significant. You have to be extremely precise. Additionally, I have OCD so I can never accept good; it has to be great and that can be challenging.

4) Who is your mentor (if any)?

My older sister.  She is also a Dentist and I have always admired and looked up to her.  I was blessed to have her guidance along my journey. Everything I am is because of that woman!

5) Best piece of advice for someone pursuing your field?

Stay focused on the end goal because the road will be very tiring, rough and really test your mental stamina. The rainbow after the storm is so BEAUTIFUL and rewarding.

6) If you have not chosen this profession would have you chosen instead?
I would have been a surgeon. I love working with my hands and that’s another profession where you really change lives.

7) Favorite designer?

I wouldn’t say I have a favorite.  It depends on my mood and vibe I’m going for. I have really been into Fe Noel lately. I own so many of her wide leg pants.

8) Favorite makeup brand?

Bobbi Brown

9) Favorite hair care?

I love Shea Moisture products.

10) Favorite skin brand?

There is this amazing face wash I absolutely love called Glytone Mild Gel Cleanser.

11) If you could only choose 5 items to put in your purse everyday, what would they be?

Pink lipstick, Mascara, Hair Tie, and Tooth Brush and Toothpaste of course ?

12) Free plug:)– Anything you would like our readers to know that you are supporting, selling or creating?

CareerFab: Attorney and Designer Cheslie Kryst

  • Posted By : admin/

What do you get when you mix a fashionista, entrepreneur and a lawyer?  You get super attorney and fashion designer Cheslie Kryst!  Read on to learn about her life as attorney and how she can help you take the “work” out of work wear with her website WhiteCollarGlam.com !

1. Why did you choose your profession?

I was always negotiating on behalf of my siblings when we grew up. If we broke a window in the house or got in trouble, I was always the one who would make the call to mom to explain what happened and to discuss punishment. I considered other careers while I was growing up, but being an attorney is the one that feels most natural to me.

2. What is the favorite part of your job?

Winning. I like advocating for our clients and getting them the outcome that they need.

3. What is the most difficult part of your job?

Anxiety and fear of failure or mistakes. It’s my job to represent and advocate for others. I don’t want to mess that up for someone who put their faith and trust in me.

4. Who is your mentor (if any)?

I have several, but my mom is the one I talk to the most. She owns her own human resources consulting firm that she built from the ground up. I remember watching her spend long nights in our home office and it was inspiring and motivating. I trust and rely on her advice.

5. Best piece of advice for someone pursuing your field?

Make sure you love it. Being an attorney isn’t for people who just want to make money. You have to go through too much school and endure too much stress to be in this profession just for the money. There has to be something about it that you love.

6. If you have not chosen this profession would have you chosen instead?

Director of Marketing for a company. I loved earning my MBA at Wake Forest and it opened my eyes to the possibility of careers other than being an attorney. I enjoyed learning about marketing and always looked forward to my marketing classes.

7. Favorite designer?

Christian Siriano. He makes fantastic clothing for women of all ages, shapes, sizes, and races.

8. Favorite makeup brand?

MAC. I used to compete in pageants and fell in love with the brand because of the excellent choices they had for stage makeup.

9. Favorite hair care?

Shea Moisture. They have a lot of different lines of shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in conditioner and I love everything I’ve tried!

10. Favorite skin brand?

I only use Neutrogena’s Deep Clean Cream Cleanser. I don’t use any other face washes or creams.

11. If you could only choose 5 items to put in your purse everyday, what would they be?

Wallet, business card holder, chapstick, notebook, and pen.

12. Free plug:)– Anything you would like our readers to know that you are supporting, selling or creating?

I run WhiteCollarGlam.com, a fashion blog for workwear.  I’m planning a guide on where to find the perfect suit and I’ll be publishing it for free for all my readers in the next few weeks!

Education (Schools Attended) BSBA – Honors College at the University of South Carolina; JD – Wake Forest University School of Law; MBA – Wake Forest University School of Business

Certifications or Licenses? Licensed to practice law in North Carolina

CareerFab: Attorney and Music Manager Sandi B.

  • Posted By : admin/
  • Under : CAREER

What do you get when you mix music, politics and the law? You get Sandi Gollen Balendra!  Sandi is an Entertainment Lawyer, Music Manager, London College of Fashion Professor and Founder of VMM Invest! Read below on how she got her start and how she balances it all!

1) Why did you choose your profession?

I think it came from having learned to be independent and persuasive at a very young age as I attended boarding school from the age of 8 years old. As I got older I was always surrounded by lawyers and regularly assisted at a family law firm during high school. My mother later introduced me into the world of politics and I was lucky to be mentored by an incredibly inspiring Trade Union Lawyer and politician who was also a Member of Parliament where I worked for a very long time before and after graduating from Law. It was here that I was truly inspired as I was based at the heart of Law making and Policies, having worked as a Campaigner and Researcher at the UK Houses Of Parliament.

2) What is the favorite part of your job?

I would say, now more than ever the favourite part of my job is the fact that it is so versatile and varied. I also think that having the freedom to truly enjoy my work is deeply empowering as I can pretty much cherry pick the clients and brands I work with and I’m incredibly grateful to be working with some of the most talented creative artists, academics, fashion designers and musician’s in the industry. The job has also enabled me to travel which is always a good thing!. My firm’s focus is on Music, Fashion, Technology and Art and my career has allowed me to work with exceptional character’s supporting philanthropic causes within the remit of eco consciousness, sustainable and ethical sourcing as well as sponsoring rising talent. It has also been incredibly enriching being an Advisory Panel Trustee at the London College of Fashion’s fund raising committee where I lecture and conduct mentor programmes in Business and Enterprise to Post Grad students looking to start up their own line and label or aspire to work for top designers. This career lifestyle enabled me to wear several hats as a Lawyer (Solicitor as we say in the U.K) but also as an entrepreneur and business woman.

3) What is the most difficult part of your job?

There’s a saying that Lawyers are the one profession in which pessimists outperform the optimists. This rings true especially when dealing with matters relating to a side of this job where I also act as Publicist as well as a Lawyer. A proportion of my client’s are high profile and I do take pride in the fact that I can ‘tell it how it is’ to even the most well known of artists/celebrities I work with, and thankfully this has only worked to enhance the effectiveness of my work, but saying that, it’s still a tough thing to do, especially when you develop a friendship for most of the people you work with, its not always easy thing to do but part of the job and always appreciated with the desired results in the end.

4) Who is your mentor (if any)?

I have many mentors, the first and most important one is my mother, a truly exceptional lady. She is my rock beyond any, she taught me the value of thinking evolved, beyond barriers and at all times with curiosity, logic and creativity and always with a touch of fabulousness!

Throughout the years I have been mentored by a handful of amazing people, one of them being Andrew Dismore Greater London Assembly Member and former Member of Parliament, who still inspires me to this day!

5) Best piece of advice for someone pursuing your field?

I would definitely say, try not to stick to one area of law throughout the early stages of your career as some may suggest. Sometimes, it takes time for you to really find your niche. I started in Litigation and Criminal Law and then Commercial and Technology Law and eventually found my true calling within Media & Entertainment Law. Take your time to find out what really makes you tick because that passion and drive is what will carry you towards progress.

6) If you have not chosen this profession would have you chosen instead?

Most probably a writer or journalist/news presenter. The world of Creatives, Art and Communications have always been a passion of mine!

7) Favorite designer?

Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen and Moschino

8) Favorite makeup brand?

Chanel, M.A.C and Benefit

9) Favorite hair care?

My GHD Straighteners!

10) Favorite skin brand?

Lancôme, LaRoche Posay and The Body Shop

11) If you could only choose 5 items to put in your purse everyday, what would they be?

1) My Deep Red Armani Matte Lipstick

2) Anti-Bac Handwipes

3) Of course my phone!

4) My Car & House keys

5) My favourite Eau De Parfum of either Gucci Bamboo or Armani Si (or both!)

12) Free plug:)– Anything you would like our readers to know that you are supporting, selling or creating?

CareerFab: Entrepreneurs and Super Attorney Group KMR Law Group!

  • Posted By : admin/

  • Under : CAREER
There’s Destiny’s Child, TLC, and BBD but have you heard of KMR?  Say hello to Chicago Attorneys Jessica, Yondi and Keli who are the owners and partners of the KMR Law Group.  They have been featured on “The Real”, “NBC News”, “Fortune Magazine” and “The Atlantic” to name a few.  In honor of Women’s Month, we are happy to feature this super woman group! Read on to figure out the challenges and benefits of being an attorney and entrepreneur. Jessica Reddick’s answers are in blue, Yondi Morris are in pink and Keli Knight are in orange. Visit them online at: www.kmrlawgroup.com !
1) Why did you choose your profession?
Out of college I had a job at a large financial investment firm. I was working there with the intention of attending business school. After a year there, I quickly realized that finance was not the industry for me, so I left and tested the water in several other fields. I finally found my fit at a large law firm in my hometown of Washington, D.C. It quickly became clear that I had a legal mind, but had no desire to commit to the lifestyle of a top law firm where billing a high number of hours was a requirement. So I applied to law school with a passion for the law, but with the intention of paving my own way.
I knew at a young age that I wanted to be an attorney. I’m sure one of my parents encouraged me because I was talkative and argumentative. As the years went on, those qualities only increased and my interest in the law increased as well.
Growing up I was always told I was going to be a lawyer, likely because of my desire to debate every single topic! When people tell you something from the age of 5 on up, it just kind of sticks. One of my dad’s best friends was a lawyer and as I got older, he started to help me learn how to critically develop my arguments. So it just fit! It was no surprise when I decided to attend law school.

2) What is the favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of practicing with entrepreneurs as clients is being able to play a major role in the development of dreams. Whether it’s helping them finally form the business they’ve been dreaming about or protecting a piece of work that they have created, I find it extremely fulfilling to support my clients on the journey from vision to reality.
I love being an entrepreneur. It’s very satisfying to work within a culture that I helped cultivate, especially when I receive feedback that my clients enjoy the culture. It’s also important for me to be a transparent and welcoming legal resource to young people of color who may not have personal connections with attorneys and may not feel comfortable reaching out to one because of the stigma surrounding attorneys.
Being an entrepreneur is really exciting to me. I enjoy approaching challenges through a business lens, and figuring out how to get the best outcome. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night with a marketing idea, or a new policy that our firm can adopt. That’s often what keeps me going when things get tough.

3) What is the most difficult part of your job?   I find it very difficult to disconnect as an entrepreneur.  We are ALWAYS on call as owners of the firm, whether it be client centred or adminstrative and regardless of the time of the day, it is our responsibility to manage everything that comes up.  The beauty is that I love my partners and we have built a wonderful support system within KMR.
Continuing to come up with innovative ways to handle our business and find clients is always challenging because we strive to brand ourselves in a totally different manner than other law firms so there isn’t necessarily a template to work from; just tons of creative thinking and risk taking.
Because our law firm is our baby, sometimes it’s very hard to disconnect from it. Thus, work/life balance has always been a pretty big challenge for us.

4) Who is your mentor (if any)?
For us as entrepreneurs, mentors are EVERYTHING. Starting a business is such a humbling experience and one of the most important lessons to learn is how to ask for help. Before we opened our doors at KMR, we met with mentors for a whole year who shared their expertise with us. From other lawyers who had successfully started their firm, to those who worked for many years at a large law firm, to judges and corporate counsel, we asked as many questions as we could. Also, as owners of a firm, we are also entrepreneurs, so we reached out to people who worked in areas that we had no expertise in but knew we would need, which included CPAs, marketing and branding consultants, business consultants and more.
I really have quite a few. I believe in networking and often have made it almost a part time job. Because of that, I have met a lot of wonderful people while I have been practicing, and they have become informal mentors. From partners at firms to savvy business people, I try to learn from everyone!

5) Best piece of advice for someone pursuing your field?
Think outside the box and create your own path. The field of law can be so traditional and so many lawyers get stuck on the partnership track, quickly finding themselves burned out. What the three of us have in common is that we all looked outside what we were told. We saw a void and filled it.
Dream big. When you work around the clock to realize whatever dream you have, you are likely to accomplish it. But, it takes a lot of hard work. Be okay with challenges and maybe even failure, but don’t give up if it is something you truly are passionate about.

6) If you have not chosen this profession would have you chosen instead?
I consider myself to be a creative, which is why I love working with entertainers and entrepreneurs as my clients. I would maybe be an sports/entertainment agent if not a lawyer. I have a passion for creating and love to be surrounded by people using their talents to chase after dreams.
I would have likely been a therapist. I majored in Psychology in undergrad because it was a big interest of mine.
I always wanted to be an interior designer. I enjoy the arts and often help others decorate their homes in my spare time to satisfy the urge I have to decorate!

7) Favorite designer?
I believe that personal style is a great way to express yourself. I am really quite versatile and love to mix classic staples with an unexpected twist! I can’t name 1 designer because it really depends on my mood and I am constantly searching for new fashion inpiration. I will invest in a major purchase but I also LOVE a unique vintage piece.
I tend to wear a lot of different brands, but my favorite store at the moment is Zara.

8) Favorite makeup brand?
I am not a heavy make-up girl, as I tend to focus more on skin care and beauty regimes so that I don’t NEED much make-up! I will say that I am loving the Fenty brand. It is so important to see a brands created for us by us …. and it is GOOD!
I agree with Jessica regarding Fenty. I otherwise use MAC because the brand is also pretty good with colors that are made for different skin tones while also being bold and bright and trendy.
No clue, I don’t wear much make up or have a specific brand. I am loving this new mascara I have made by Benefit.

9) Favorite hair care?
I’ve been using Kerastase for years, and also have natural hair, which I love using Shea Moisture products on when wearing my hair curly.
My go to for the last 15 years has been products in the Aveda Brillant line.
10) Favorite skin brand?
I love using natural products as much as possible, so my favorite facial oils and cream are from Whole Foods! For my skin I focus on drinking LOTS of water and moisturizing EVERYDAY.
Aveno.
11) If you could only choose 5 items to put in your purse everyday, what would they be?
Cell phone, wallet, keys, lip gloss & hand cream.
Cell phone, wallet, lip balm, business cards and laptop charger
Cell phone, wallet, laptop (yep, I carry big purses), bottle of water and a pen.

Recognized by ESSENCE Magazine as a top 40 executive under 40, Valeisha Butterfield Jones has blazed a humanitarian and entrepreneurial trail for nearly two decades.  Valeisha is married to 2016 NBA champion Dahntay Jones of the Cleveland Cavaliers and is mother of three. She is also the daughter of U.S. Congressman G. K Butterfield and N.C. State Legislator Jean Farmer Butterfield.  Have an interest in community engagement or entertainment? Then read on!

1) Why did you choose your profession?  Currently, I serve as the Head of Black Community Engagement for Google which is responsible for strengthening and deepening the technology giant’s affinity to the Black community globally.  I am also the current Co-founder and CEO of the Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network.  As a music fan, I was always intrigued by the business behind the art. While in college, I worked for a music company and quickly realized my passion. It was to serve as a conduit to bridge the gap between pop culture and social justice. In my 20-year career, I’ve been extremely blessed and intentional about working in my craft and doing what I love.

2) What is the favorite part of your job? Making a difference in people’s lives, especially being able to provide budget, capital and resources to important projects that move our culture forward. Also, being responsible for the career development and advancement of young women.

3) What is the most difficult part of your job? Not being able to support or fund every great idea. Making those tough decisions are hard, especially when you know the ideas are viable.

4) Who is your mentor (if any)?  My mentor in Kevin Liles. He invested in me at the very beginning of my career and is responsible for helping me navigate professionally.

5) Best piece of advice for someone pursuing your field?  Plan, but don’t hold yourself hostage to fake timelines. Run your own race, celebrate the small wins and play the long game. Consistency is key.

6) If you have not chosen this profession would have you chosen instead?  There has never been a Plan B.

7) Favorite designer?  Stella McCartney and Alaia

8) Favorite makeup brand? Bobbi Brown

9) Favorite hair care? Carol’s Daughter
